Why this is the correct answer
When Confederation occurred on 1 July 1867, four provinces joined together to form the new Dominion of Canada: Ontario and Quebec (previously united as the Province of Canada), along with Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Other provinces joined later, with Newfoundland and Labrador being the last to join in 1949. British Columbia, Alberta and Manitoba are not among the original four.
