What Happens on Einbürgerungstest Day (Step-by-Step Walkthrough)

A calm walkthrough of the German citizenship test appointment, from arrival and ID check to the 33 questions, the time limit, and getting your result.

A lot of test-day nerves come from not knowing what the appointment is actually like. The Einbürgerungstest is a calm, paper-based exam, and the routine is the same at every test centre. Here is what to expect from the moment you arrive to the moment you leave.

Before you go

Make sure you know the exact address and time, since the test is held at the centre where you registered, usually a Volkshochschule. Bring a valid photo identity document, such as your passport or residence card. You do not need to bring study materials, and you will not be allowed to use them during the test. Arrive in good time, because latecomers may not be admitted once the test has started.

Arrival and identity check

When you arrive, staff check you in and confirm your identity against your photo ID. This is why the document is essential: without it, you may not be able to sit the test. You are shown to a seat, and the staff explain how the test works before it begins. There is no interview and no spoken examination. The whole thing is written.

The test itself

You receive a question sheet with 33 multiple-choice questions. Thirty are general questions about German law, history, and society, and three relate to the federal state where you are taking the test. Each question has four answer options, and exactly one is correct. You mark your answers on the sheet provided.

You have 60 minutes. That is a comfortable amount of time for 33 questions if you have prepared, so there is no need to rush. Many people finish well before the hour is up. Work through the questions at a steady pace, and if one is unclear, move on and come back to it.

How passing works

To pass, you need at least 17 correct answers out of 33. There is no benefit to a higher score beyond passing, so the goal is simply to clear the threshold. If you have practised the official questions, the test will feel familiar, because every question comes from the public catalogue you can study in advance.

After the test

You do not get your result immediately. The answer sheets are marked centrally, and your certificate is sent to you afterwards, usually within a few weeks. When it arrives, keep it safe. The certificate does not expire, so you can use it whenever you submit your naturalisation application.

Walk in already knowing the questions

The reason the test feels manageable is that nothing on it is a surprise. Every question is published in advance, so preparation is about familiarity, not luck. PassCitizen has the full official catalogue, sorted by topic and with the state-specific questions for your federal state, plus mock exams in the exact 33-question format so the real thing feels routine. It is free and needs no account.
