Government and the Law › Government Structure
What does it mean that Australia has responsible government?
- That all government decisions must be approved by the public
- That ministers are personally liable for their decisions
- That the executive government must maintain the confidence of the elected lower house of Parliament to remain in power
- That the government is financially responsible
Why this is the correct answer
Responsible government means the executive — the Prime Minister and Cabinet — can only govern as long as they retain the confidence of the elected House of Representatives. If the House passes a motion of no confidence, the government must resign or call an election.
